Cleaning up the Great Gyre of the Pacific

Instead of letting that plastic trash heap get larger and larger, why not start an enterprise to harvest the plastic for recycling? We already know how much harm it does to pelagic species of the Ocean.
All that is needed is a little push for a trash barge and harvester which is simply a rotating cylinder with stiff wires to spear or trap the plastic rope, boxes, milk jugs, soda bottles, six-pack collars, traps, long-lines, plastic shopping bags, crab pots. You name it, it's there. Most of this trash is separable and hauling it back to the mainland is a simple procedure.
The Council on Environmental Solutions agree that burning this waste is a much more cost effective way since any value has been lost to degradation.  An aggregate of sea going barges could be configured in an array with a huge retort of an oven set in place. The fuel could be simply nuclear wastes to fire the plant or even other fuels that are in surplus.
One day, solar ovens might take the place of fuel driven furnaces.  Once the process is started it is simple enough to keep going to eventually make a dent in the size of the gyre. This is easier than it appears! Over time, a ship would appear either donated or contracted. A real speciality vessel! The fly ash could be compacted. It could sent to the mainland or buried at sea. It could be hardened into a block to prevent another type of environmental disaster..
Just think of putting your kids on a ship to do meaningful work for the Summer. All the seafood they can eat and get paid for it. Just for the camaraderie, it would attract many young adults who just want to get away for awhile. If I was 16 I would jump at the chance. Advertise inner city. Start a trend! Go bold!
